Orthopaedic
In the late 80’s we developed OSCAR – the Orthosonics System for Cemented Arthroplasty Revision. This has become the world's most successful cement removal system for orthopaedic revision surgery.
The problem that faced surgeons during cemented revision arthroplasty surgery (ie, when cemented joint replacements needed to be re-done) was safely removing the old PMMA cement that had held the implant in place. OSCAR was developed to melt and remove the old cement, discriminating between the cortical bone and cement and, in turn, saving thousands of broken bones.
The latest generation of OSCAR incorporates a digital frequency control system, with the option of a dedicated endoscope, camera and flat screen monitor so that a surgeon can observe the cement removal process and interface with recording equipment.
By drastically reducing the number of bone canal fractures during revision surgery, OSCAR has saved thousands of days of hospital stay for patients across the world and thousands of operating hours for surgeons.
The OSCAR system is manufactured by SRA Developments at our Devon headquarters. The Intellectual Property, manufacturing and exclusive marketing rights are owned by Orthosonics Ltd (part of the Orthofix group). For more detailed information on OSCAR, visit the Orthosonics website.
